Amazon rings in the new year by reducing FBA inventory caps for sellers

Amazon sellers received some good news at the start of the new year. Amazon announced that it was reducing its inventory product index score to 400 from 450 previously. The threshold is designed to monitor how effectively sellers manage their storage at Amazon's fulfillment centers, with the company penalizing low-scoring sellers with capacity limits that can ultimately impact their bottom line.

Amazon's update marks the latest in a series of changes imposed during the pandemic that target FBA storage and restock levels. Sellers have previously complained that the constant restrictions, especially on goods they could send into Amazon’s warehouses for fulfillment, were hurting sales during critical shopping periods including Cyber Week and the holidays.

Hopefully, this move will alleviate some of the stocking stress that Amazon sellers have experienced for almost two years. As Amazon builds more fulfillment centers, the stocking restrictions should be alleviated even more.

Throughout the pandemic we have worked to support you—postponing and keeping fee changes low, reducing or eliminating select fees like those for customer returns, and absorbing billions of dollars in increased costs on your behalf—all while making significant and necessary investments in people, technology, transportation, and infrastructure.

In 2022, we will adjust FBA fulfillment fees to partially offset the higher permanent operating costs we face going forward. This and prior fee changes since the pandemic continue to be lower than other logistics service providers. Accounting for these changes, our fees remain 30% less expensive on average than if sellers were to fulfill orders on their own, providing FBA sellers with premium expedited fulfillment and delivery speed for lower than standard service prices.

Free BSR Chart

The Amazon Category Best Sales Rank Chart might not be as pertinent as it was in years past, but it still provides value and is worth a look.

Every product is assigned a BSR by Amazon that changes by minute, hour, or day. This rank is indicative of how well an item is selling in its category. A rank of 1 would be the best product in that category. The higher the BSR, the fewer the sales of that product. As with most things with Amazon, it is complicated.

The BSR Chart lists the rankings per category. so let's say you are sourcing books and you find one with a BSR of 3 million. You might think you should pass, but in Books, a rank of 3.5 million is in the top 5%. Home and Kitchen is another category where a rank of 4 million is in the top 5%.

1. Log in to Seller Central, hover over REPORTS, and click on PAYMENTS.
2. Click on the DATE RANGE REPORTS tab.
3. Click the GENERATE REPORT button.
4. Select the SUMMARY option.
5. Choose the account type you want to include.
6. Select the CUSTOM date range option and enter from 01/01/2021 of the year to 12/31/2021.
7. Click GENERATE.

  • Amazon made good on its promise to remove unregulated supplements: "Effective January 10, 2022, we are not allowing listings that do not meet our documentation requirements for sexual enhancement or weight loss and weight management products."
  • It seems that Amazon is raising pricing on most items by 5%. One area where the price is increasing drastically is large standard size items that are under 12 oz., that don't have dimensional weight. That is changing and Amazon will start calculating dimensional weight on any large standard size item.
  • Amazon is now the top retailer for wedding registries with 45% of listing penetration, according to CNBC, topping Bed Bath & Beyond and Target.
  • Amazon has scrapped a ban on phones in warehouses, allowing workers to keep their devices on them while they work. The move followed the deaths of six Amazon staffers at a facility in Illinois that was struck by a tornado last week.
